Keep the installed eSIM. First check that it is enabled, selected for mobile data and being used inside the package’s coverage area. Then check the remaining allowance and the provider’s connection settings. An installed profile, signal bars and a working internet connection are three different things.
This checklist is for a travel eSIM already visible in your phone’s SIM settings. If the profile never appeared, or the QR scanner rejects the code, use the QR-code checks instead. If you have not reached the destination, read the before-departure activation guide before changing settings.

Find which connection has failed
| What you see | Start here | Avoid this assumption |
|---|---|---|
| No service on the travel line | Check covered location and network registration | Installed means usable everywhere |
| Signal bars, but no webpages | Check data-line selection, allowance and supplied APN | Signal bars prove an internet session |
| Webpages work, but one app fails | Check that app’s cellular permission and restrictions | The entire eSIM has failed |
| Phone browses, but a laptop cannot | Use the separate hotspot checklist | Hotspot permission follows automatically |
Select the travel line and make one small test
Stay somewhere with a reliable way back to Wi-Fi. Pause large downloads and open a small webpage rather than running repeated speed tests. Briefly turn Wi-Fi off for the test; otherwise a successful page load may say nothing about the travel eSIM. Reconnect to Wi-Fi if you need the provider’s instructions.
- Open the SIM settings and confirm the travel profile is enabled. Do not choose Remove SIM or Delete eSIM.
- Select that profile as the mobile-data line. Review any automatic data-switching option so the home SIM does not silently take over.
- Apply the roaming setting supplied for the travel line only. Keep your home SIM’s roaming and call charges separate.
- Try the small webpage again and note whether you have no signal, no internet at all, or only one failing app.
| Phone family | Where to check | Official reference |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data → Cellular Data; select the travel line | Apple travel data-line guidance |
| Google Pixel | Settings → Network & internet → SIMs; check Mobile data and Use SIM | Google mobile-data checks |
| Samsung Galaxy | Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Mobile data; choose the travel SIM | Samsung data-line checks |
Menu names vary with the model, software and carrier. A generic label such as Secondary may refer to either line: check the profile against your order rather than guessing from its position in the list. For the broader two-line setup, use our iPhone dual-SIM guide.
Check the package, not just the phone
- Location: is this exact country included? A nearby border, a ship or an airport stop is not automatically covered.
- Validity: has the package started, and has it expired? Read the order’s actual start rule, not a general installation tip.
- Allowance: is there usable data left? Look for a separate daily high-speed limit or an exhausted package.
- Account action: is a required activation or identity-check step still pending? Use the provider’s own account and support channel.
If the issue is reduced speed rather than a complete loss of internet, check the fair-use and throttling guide. Buying more data will not repair an unsupported destination or the wrong data-line selection. Equally, a phone’s local usage counter is not always the provider’s billing balance.

Use only the connection settings for your eSIM
An APN tells the phone how to reach the data service. Do not copy an APN from another provider or a search-result comment. If your order supplies settings, follow those exact instructions. On iPhone, the carrier may hide or lock the APN menu; its absence is not proof of a broken phone. Apple explains carrier-controlled APN editing.
For Airalo, open the purchased eSIM’s connection instructions in the app. They identify whether a manual APN and data roaming are needed for that profile. Do not borrow settings from a different Airalo package:its device connection guide separates installation from getting online.
Use automatic network selection unless your provider names a supported partner and asks you to select it manually. If you tried a manual selection and it failed, restore the previous setting. Avoid downloading configuration profiles from unofficial troubleshooting pages.
Retry registration once, then stop guessing
When you are not in a call, toggle airplane mode on and off once, then allow the phone to reconnect. A restart is another reversible check. Apple’s eSIM troubleshooting sequence includes both. If there is little or no signal, try a different nearby location rather than repeatedly reinstalling the profile.
If only one app fails, check its cellular-data permission and whether the service works at your destination. If a personal VPN is involved, you can test briefly without it if it is safe and permitted, then restore your protection. Do not remove work-management profiles or security controls to follow a generic guide.

What to send the provider
- Order reference, exact package and current country/city.
- Phone model, software version and the exact error wording.
- Whether the profile appears, whether it has signal, and whether any small webpage works with Wi-Fi off.
- The checks already tried and the time the failure occurred. Share an ICCID or other identifier only through verified private support if requested.
Keep QR codes, activation strings, passwords and account identifiers out of public screenshots. Do not erase the eSIM or reset the phone while waiting for support. If support proposes replacement, ask how the remaining allowance and validity will be handled before removing the existing profile.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I have signal bars but no internet?
Bars indicate a radio connection, not necessarily usable data. Check that the travel line is selected for data, that the package has allowance and validity, and that its required connection settings are applied.
Should roaming be enabled on both SIMs to fix this?
No. Follow the purchased travel eSIM’s roaming instructions. Your home line has separate charges and settings; enabling it is not a general repair for travel data.
Should I delete the eSIM and install it again?
Not as a first fix. Recovery depends on the exact profile and provider. Keep it installed and ask the provider whether a supported recovery or replacement is available.
