eSIM and travel statistics at a glance
| Measure | Figure | Period and source |
|---|---|---|
| Global smartphone connections using eSIM | 5% | End-2025 estimate · GSMA |
| Travel-eSIM package revenue | $989 million | 2024 estimate · Juniper Research |
| International overnight tourist arrivals | 1.52 billion | 2025 estimate · UN Tourism |
| Travel & tourism contribution to GDP | $11.6 trillion | 2025 estimate, including indirect and induced effects · WTTC |
| Worldwide airline passenger traffic | +0.2% | July 2026 vs July 2025, RPK · IATA |
These numbers answer different questions. A visitor arrival is a trip, not necessarily a different person. A mobile connection is not a handset sale. Tourism’s economic contribution includes much more than mobile data. None is a count of people who bought a travel eSIM.

How fast is the eSIM industry growing?
Digital SIMs are moving from an optional phone feature into everyday travel planning. You can choose connectivity alongside flights and accommodation, install it before departure and keep your usual number for the people who already know it.

| End of 2025 | 5% | GSMA Intelligence estimate |
| End of 2026 | 10% | Forecast |
| 2027 | 20% | Forecast: doubling of 10% |
Compatibility and adoption still differ. Owning an eSIM-capable phone does not mean its owner has switched their main line or bought a second plan. The useful direction of travel is broader choice; the practical question remains whether your phone, destination and package work together.
Travel eSIM revenue is a separate market

| 2024 | $989 million | Juniper estimate |
| 2025 | $1.8 billion | October 2025 forecast |
A travel package can be bought more than once by the same person. Revenue growth therefore does not tell us how many new travellers joined the market. It can reflect repeat trips, larger allowances or changing prices. Nor should a travel-data estimate be mixed with forecasts that also include connected vehicles, industrial devices and SIM technology licensing.
For a holiday, bigger market totals are less useful than a clear package. Compare the total you will spend, the full-speed allowance and how many days it lasts. A low headline price with too little data is not automatically better value.
More travel creates more moments when connectivity matters
International overnight arrivals rose 4% in 2025, almost 60 million above 2024. This was a strong travel year, although it did not mean every destination grew at the same pace. These are estimated arrival counts, so one frequent traveller can contribute several trips. UN Tourism, January 2026.
The wider travel economy supported an estimated 366 million jobs in 2025, around one in nine worldwide. Its 4.1% annual growth exceeded the global economy’s 2.8%. Those figures include direct activity and the businesses and household spending it supports, rather than just tourist purchases. WTTC economic impact research.
Investment also passed $1 trillion in 2025, up 8.5%. New accommodation, transport and visitor facilities show why governments continue to take tourism seriously, even when demand is unsettled. Investment signals confidence; it is not a promise that the next season will be busy. WTTC, August 2026.
Connectivity fits into the small moments of those trips: finding the right station exit, receiving a changed pickup location, translating a menu or retrieving a booking. That need is not limited to executives or digital nomads. It exists on a short family break just as much as a months-long journey.
2026: conflict, expensive fuel and an uneven recovery
The Middle East conflict disrupted air travel through cancellations, restricted airspace and higher operating costs. In April, global passenger traffic fell 3.4% year on year; excluding the Middle East, it grew 1.2%. Traffic for Middle Eastern carriers fell 46.6%. The contrast matters: a severe regional shock can pull down the world total without travel collapsing everywhere. IATA’s April traffic results.
Jet fuel: a much higher 2026 cost assumption

View chart data
| Period / region | Value | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $90 | IATA reported baseline |
| 2026 | $152 | June 2026 forecast |
IATA’s June outlook put fuel at 31.4% of airline operating expenses in 2026, compared with 25.4% in 2025. Those are full-year projections and comparisons, not a fuel surcharge on each ticket. Airlines’ routes, hedging and commercial decisions affect how costs reach fares. IATA June outlook.
Travellers can feel the disruption far from the conflict. A changed connection can add an overnight stop; a rerouted journey can make the original country-only package less useful. Keep enough flexibility for the places where you actually expect to use data, rather than buying coverage simply because a region sounds broad.
Was there a Q3 and Q4 travel boom?
A worldwide second-half boom is not established. July’s global traffic growth was just 0.2% year on year. Europe–Asia international traffic grew 12.1%, but the regional picture remained mixed. September capacity was expected to rise by almost 3%; planned seats are not completed journeys. IATA July results and September capacity outlook.

| Asia-Pacific | +1.0% | Reported, provisional |
| North America | −1.2% | Reported, provisional |
| Middle East | −10.0% | Reported, provisional |
This September edition cannot report a completed Q4. The sensible description is uneven recovery with pockets of growth. Even a strong route does not prove that passengers chose it to avoid conflict. Price, flight availability, school holidays and exchange rates can all influence the same decision.
Japan, Southeast Asia and Europe: demand without the hype
Strong 2025 destination results provide useful context for 2026 trip planning. They are not a league table of safety or evidence that all of this year’s travellers switched away from the Middle East.
| Destination | Arrivals | Year-on-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | 42.68 million visitor arrivals | +15.8% · JNTO January estimate |
| Vietnam | About 21.2 million international visitors | +20.4% · Vietnam tourism administration |
| Spain | 96.8 million international tourists | +3.2% · INE February provisional release |
These published releases can be revised, and their visitor definitions are not identical. Japan’s visitor count, for example, should not be treated as exactly the same measure as Spain’s overnight tourist count. The table shows scale within each destination, not a combined global total.
Southeast Asia is not insulated from expensive flights. Reporting from Bangkok in May described higher fuel and travel costs threatening the region’s summer season. A destination can be attractive and still face weaker bookings. Associated Press reporting.
Build your connection around the itinerary: a single-country plan for a focused stay, or a regional plan if its country list matches your route. Our destination comparison pages let you compare the actual plan options without assuming a popular destination has identical coverage everywhere.
More compatible phones, but not universal compatibility
The move away from removable SIMs makes travel eSIMs easier to consider. Compatibility still depends on the exact model and where it was sold—not just the logo on the back.
- iPhone: Apple supports international travel eSIM use on compatible models. Using another provider requires an unlocked phone; check for “No SIM Restrictions” under Carrier Lock. Regional exceptions still apply. Apple’s international eSIM guidance.
- Samsung Galaxy: supported Galaxy families include flagship models, but consult the list for your market rather than assuming every Galaxy supports eSIM. Samsung compatibility guidance.
- OPPO: the global Find X8 Pro CPH2659 specifications include eSIM. That is evidence for that model, not every OPPO or every imported variant. OPPO model specifications.
Before paying, check three things: eSIM support, carrier-unlocked status and the plan’s device requirements. If you keep two lines active, choose the intended line for mobile data and understand your home carrier’s roaming settings. Our dual-SIM iPhone travel guide walks through that setup.
Students, backpackers and groups need different things
You do not need to be a founder or a frequent business flyer to benefit from digital connectivity. The useful distinction is how you travel. We do not assign market-share percentages to students or backpackers: the figures above do not establish those demographic splits.

| Traveller | Useful priorities | Easy mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Student abroad | Arrival data, longer validity and a route to a local number if needed | Treating a short travel pack as a semester-long mobile contract |
| Backpacker | Country list, flexible top-ups and predictable total cost | Assuming every border crossing is covered by a regional label |
| Family or group | Hotspot permission and a connection for anyone travelling separately | Relying on one phone when the group splits up |
| Remote worker | Full-speed allowance, tethering and a backup connection | Assuming “unlimited” guarantees unlimited high-speed laptop use |
A useful first step is to look at your phone’s recent data use, then adjust for the trip. Hotel Wi-Fi may take care of backups, while maps, messaging and taxi apps need mobile data outside. Video uploads and laptop tethering can change the calculation quickly. Start with our 7-, 14- and 30-day travel data guide.
For groups, convenience should not become a single point of failure. Agree on a meeting place if phones lose service, save tickets locally and download a map before setting out. A small independent allowance on a second phone can be more useful than a huge allowance that everyone must share nearby.
Free eSIMs with insurance and visa services
Connectivity is increasingly offered alongside other travel purchases. That can remove a separate task from your departure checklist—but “included” does not always mean enough data for the whole holiday.
- India: TripSafe. Its travel-assistance packages combine services including travel insurance and a complimentary eSIM on listed plans. This is a specific package example, not evidence that all Indian insurers include one. TripSafe package details.
- AXA Schengen and Kolet. The partnership includes two days of data, up to 1GB, with eligible travel insurance. That is a starter allowance, not unlimited holiday data. AXA–Kolet benefit details.
- Visa preparation: Atlys and Nomad. Their announced partnership brings visa applications and eSIM connectivity into one travel-preparation journey. It does not establish that every visa purchase includes a free plan. Nomad’s partnership announcement.
Check the included countries, activation deadline, validity and whether the allowance is per person or per booking. Also separate the value of the connectivity extra from the insurance or visa service itself. A small data gift is useful, but should not decide whether a policy covers your trip properly.
Are travel eSIMs making roaming cheaper?
They give travellers another option, but there is no single price trend that covers every roaming market. Home-carrier passes, local SIMs and travel eSIMs can each make sense. A cheaper data-only plan is not an identical replacement for a bundle with calls and SMS.
Airtel’s April 2024 international-roaming launch covered 184 countries and advertised a starting effective rate of ₹133 per day. That is a dated example of competitive operator packaging, not a current quote or proof that all Asian roaming prices fell because of eSIMs. Airtel’s April 2024 announcement.
For a fair comparison, put the whole-trip cost side by side. Include the duration you must purchase, usable data, voice needs and whether your journey crosses more than one charging zone. Then check whether “unlimited” means a daily high-speed allowance followed by throttling.
- Short trip: an existing roaming inclusion may already meet your needs.
- Data-heavy holiday: compare the usable allowance, not just the package name.
- Several countries: check every stop against the plan’s coverage list.
- Keeping your number: data for WhatsApp abroad is different from inclusive mobile-network calls and texts.
An eSIM changes how a mobile subscription is delivered. It does not remove network congestion, coverage gaps, fair-use limits or local service restrictions. The good choice is the package that fits the journey, not automatically the one with the newest technology label.
Cruise eSIMs: a real option, with important boundaries
A cruise changes the comparison. Offshore connectivity needs a supported ship and a maritime service. Your phone can connect to the ship’s cellular equipment, which carries traffic onwards using satellite backhaul. That is not your phone connecting directly to Starlink.
| Provider | What is available | Boundary to understand |
|---|---|---|
| GigSky | Cruise and land connectivity options | Select a supported sailing and the appropriate coverage · cruise coverage |
| Saily | Dedicated cruise eSIM plans | Separate from ordinary land plans; availability is being rolled out · cruise guidance |
| Maya Mobile | Global Cruise Connectivity add-on | Separate purchase; vessel and route eligibility apply · service terms |
There is no universal cruise-eSIM speed benchmark. The ship’s equipment, satellite connection and available capacity all matter. A service that handles a message comfortably may not suit a long video meeting. We do not present a provider’s maximum or a single sailing’s experience as a measured speed for every voyage.
Saily describes supported maritime coverage beyond 12 nautical miles. Maya’s terms make clear that its cruise add-on does not guarantee a particular speed. Do not assume that a land plan, a ship’s Wi-Fi package and a cruise eSIM use the same allowance. Saily cruise coverage · Maya service terms.
Choose according to what you need onboard. Messaging and occasional browsing are a different workload from cloud backups or streaming. Confirm the vessel, sailing and offshore service first; use our offline maps guide to prepare for port days without making mobile coverage your only navigation backup.

Travel eSIM price snapshot
Snapshot date: . Prices are in USD per GB and describe our sample, not every eSIM sold worldwide.
The median of 215 qualifying country-level medians is $2.88 USD/GB. Türkiye has the lowest qualifying country median at $0.74 USD/GB.
228 destinations have snapshot rows; 215 have a price median and meet the threshold of at least 50 metered plans from 5 providers. Each qualifying country median gets equal weight. This is not a sales-weighted global price or the median of every listed plan.
Use this benchmark to understand the range of choices, not to predict the bill for an individual holiday. A smaller package can have a higher cost per GB but still cost less overall. Daily and unlimited allowances also need their own comparison, rather than being treated as an identical bucket of data.

What could change by 2027?
The outlook points towards more digital connections, not the disappearance of every physical SIM. Adoption can advance even when tourism slows, because local mobile subscriptions also move to eSIM. Equally, rising traveller numbers do not automatically mean rising eSIM spending per trip.
For travellers, the most useful developments to watch are practical rather than spectacular:
- Easier setup: fewer steps between buying a plan and getting connected.
- Clearer packaging: understandable daily allowances, throttling and hotspot rules.
- Better distribution: connectivity offered through travel services you already use.
- More transparent comparisons: whole-trip prices and honest coverage rather than “from” prices alone.
Those are areas to watch, not promised outcomes. The forecasts shown here can change with device upgrades, operator support, competition and economic conditions. Flight disruption and high fares may alter where people travel, how long they stay and which connection makes sense.
Our takeaway: eSIM is becoming an ordinary travel tool, not a magic connection everywhere. Start with your route and phone, then choose a sensible allowance. Keep an offline backup for the moments when any mobile network can fail.
Frequently asked questions
How big is the travel eSIM market?
Juniper Research estimated worldwide travel-eSIM package revenue at $989 million in 2024 and forecast $1.8 billion for 2025 in its October 2025 release. The latter remains a forecast in this comparison. These figures exclude the broader eSIM hardware and IoT markets.
What is the eSIM adoption forecast for 2027?
GSMA’s May 2026 outlook expects global eSIM smartphone penetration to double again in 2027 after reaching a forecast 10% at the end of 2026. That implies 20%, not a measured 2027 result or the share of travellers buying an eSIM.
Has global tourism fully bounced back from the 2026 disruption?
The available evidence does not show a uniform recovery. IATA reported global passenger traffic rising 0.2% year on year in July 2026, while Middle Eastern carriers remained below July 2025. A completed Q4 outcome is not available in this September 2026 edition.
Do free insurance eSIMs cover a whole holiday?
Not necessarily. A complimentary eSIM can be a small starter allowance rather than a full-trip package. Check eligible destinations, data allowance, validity and activation conditions before relying on it as your only connection.
Can an ordinary travel eSIM connect at sea?
Do not assume so. Offshore service needs a cruise-enabled plan, a supported ship and the relevant maritime network. A country or regional land plan does not automatically include a cruise connection, and an eSIM is not a direct Starlink subscription.
Do RoamSonar plan counts measure eSIM market share?
No. Our figures count active catalogue listings, providers and covered destinations. They do not measure subscribers, sales or market share. Our price index is a separate dated sample with minimum plan and provider thresholds.
