How coupon pricing works on RoamSonar

Why rankings use the verified effective price, when strikethroughs appear and what to check at provider checkout.

Live-data guide. Prices and plan counts below come from the same catalog as the comparison pages. Editorial review: 2026-07-29.
According to RoamSonar's price index, Japan has 84 live eSIM plans from 3 providers, starting at $2.54 as of July 2026.

The price we rank

RoamSonar stores a provider’s base USD price and computes an effective price when an active, display-allowed coupon applies. Every cheapest, fastest and recommended comparison that uses money relies on that effective price. A coupon is not painted onto the card after ranking.

If a $20 plan has a verified 15% code, the discount is $3 and the effective price is $17. The card may show $20 struck through and $17 as the current comparison price. If the coupon is inactive, hidden from public display or not valid for that provider, the effective price remains the base price and no strikethrough appears.

Why a strikethrough is conditional

Retail sites often use an old or imaginary list price to create urgency. RoamSonar’s rule is narrower: the struck-through “was” amount appears only when the stored base price is greater than the computed effective price because of a real public coupon. The percentage, base price and effective price must agree arithmetically.

The catalog is re-synced, and effective prices are recomputed when plan prices or coupon settings change. Coupon records carry a verification date. If a code fails or its terms change, the display setting can be removed and cache purged without waiting for every article or card to be edited.

Automatic versus entered at checkout

Coupon instructions are not interchangeable. Simbye’s ESM15 discount is applied through the tracked link according to the stored note. Surfroam’s ESIMADVICE10 and GigSky’s ESIMADVICE15 are entered at checkout. The provider card shows the stored instruction rather than claiming every code is automatic.

Copy the code when needed, follow the tracked Get plan link, and inspect the order summary before payment. A provider can limit eligibility by product, customer status, region, sale period or another checkout rule. The provider’s current checkout controls the transaction.

Live examples

Japan currently starts at $2.54 across Japan: 84 plans from 3 providers, from $2.54, best per-GB $0.76/GB. India starts at $2.54 across India: 82 plans from 3 providers, from $2.54, best per-GB $0.99/GB. These values are rendered from the same country summaries used by the public result pages, so an article does not keep a stale hard-coded “from” price.

Open the Japan results, India results, coupons page or deals page to inspect the current catalog. Currency conversion on the interface is an estimate for display; ranking and coupon math remain in USD.

The exact arithmetic

For a percentage coupon:

  • discount = base price × percentage ÷ 100;
  • effective price = base price − discount;
  • effective price per GB = effective price ÷ total usable GB;
  • trip-day price = effective price ÷ trip days.

Daily plans keep their daily structure. Unlimited plans do not receive a made-up per-GB result. Rounding is presented to cents for purchase comparison, while the database keeps the values needed to sort consistently.

Coupons do not buy rank

Providers may pay RoamSonar a commission after a tracked purchase. That commercial relationship does not change a score. A coupon can legitimately change price and therefore price-based ranking, but the provider cannot purchase a manual boost. The formula is public on How we rank, and the affiliate model is explained on How we make money.

This distinction matters: a lower verified effective price can improve value because the traveler really pays less. An advertising payment cannot.

What “exclusive” means

An exclusive badge is a coupon attribute, not a claim that the plan is uniquely available. It indicates that the stored code is marked exclusive for RoamSonar. It still needs a verification date and honest checkout instruction. Filter results by exclusive coupon only when that matters to you.

Why checkout can differ

The provider may charge in another currency, apply tax, change the base price, restrict the code or remove a plan between sync and click. Exchange rates also move. RoamSonar shows a real freshness stamp and routes the purchase through a tracked redirect, but it does not control the provider cart.

Before paying, confirm the product title, destination coverage, validity, data amount, coupon line, final currency and total. If the checkout price disagrees with RoamSonar, do not complete the order blindly. Use Contact to report it; the team verifies price corrections within 24 hours.

A transparent coupon checklist

  • Look for a real base/effective-price difference before trusting a strikethrough.
  • Read whether the code is automatic or entered manually.
  • Check the verification date.
  • Confirm the selected plan is eligible.
  • Recheck the final order total and currency.
  • Keep the order summary and code until activation succeeds.
  • Report a mismatch with the page URL and visible checkout amount, without sending payment details.

Coupon pricing is useful when it is arithmetic. By keeping the verified effective price in the ranking pipeline, RoamSonar makes the discount part of the comparison instead of a decorative banner added after the decision.
