Treat ports and sea days as different networks
An ordinary travel eSIM uses terrestrial mobile networks. Near a port it may connect normally; farther offshore it can lose those networks. The familiar rule of thumb is that national terrestrial coverage does not extend indefinitely beyond the coast, and cruise itineraries often describe international waters beyond roughly 12 nautical miles. A country eSIM is not evidence of at-sea service.
Plan two layers: port-day data and sea-day connectivity. Port data can come from country or regional eSIMs. Sea-day access may come from the ship’s Wi-Fi or a product that explicitly documents maritime coverage. Do not let the word “global” substitute for a maritime coverage statement.
Price the port itinerary
List every port and sea day. A Mediterranean sailing might need Italy, Greece and Spain on land. A Europe regional eSIM can be easier than three profiles if all ports are included and validity spans the cruise. Compare the regional total against local options using the Europe guide.

What to ask about a maritime plan
Look for an explicit ship, route or maritime network list. Check whether service works in port, at sea or both. Read the high-speed allowance, throttle rule, validity, activation trigger and supported devices. Confirm whether hotspot works, because sharing a maritime connection can be restricted or impractical.
At-sea performance can vary with the ship’s equipment, satellite path, congestion, weather and location. A provider should describe expected service without promising land-like speed everywhere. Keep critical travel documents offline.

Cruise-line Wi-Fi can be sold per device, per person, per day or for the whole sailing. Some tiers limit streaming or calls. Compare the full sailing price and device rules with any maritime eSIM. A ship package may integrate better onboard; an eSIM may be easier across ports. The right mix can be ship Wi-Fi for sea days plus a regional eSIM for shore days.
Avoid accidental satellite roaming through the home SIM. Cellular-at-sea networks can trigger expensive carrier charges. Keep data roaming off on the home line and consider airplane mode with Wi-Fi enabled while offshore. Follow the cruise line’s device guidance.
Set up before embarkation
Install profiles on reliable Wi-Fi before reaching the terminal when the activation policy allows. Label them “Ports” and “Cruise” if using two products. Save QR codes, order references, APNs and support instructions securely offline. Confirm which line owns mobile data and disable automatic switching.
At a port, the country or regional eSIM may connect to a terrestrial partner. Offshore, switch according to the maritime provider’s instructions or use ship Wi-Fi. Do not repeatedly delete profiles when the expected network is simply out of range.
Data-saving aboard
Disable cloud photo backup, app updates and video autoplay. Download entertainment before sailing. Messaging and low-bandwidth browsing preserve a limited high-speed allowance. If a plan throttles after a daily threshold, know the reset time before scheduling work calls.
