The live India market
RoamSonar currently compares India: 82 plans from 3 providers, from $2.54, best per-GB $0.99/GB. The cheapest listed India option starts at $2.54, with coupon-adjusted prices used before ranking. Open the India results with your exact trip length because a seven-day bargain is not the cheapest answer for a three-week itinerary.
India trips often combine airport transfers, city navigation, rail tickets, ride-hailing, messaging and long intercity journeys. That makes validity and dependable setup at least as important as the headline gigabytes. Install on reliable Wi-Fi before departure when the provider allows it, save the QR or manual details securely, and keep essential addresses offline.
How much data to buy
For maps, messaging, email and light browsing, a few gigabytes can cover a short visit if automatic media downloads are controlled. Social video, frequent calls, cloud photo backup and hotspot use can multiply demand. A practical estimate is better than buying “unlimited” without reading its fair-use rule.
Check the plan kind. A total plan gives one allowance for the validity period. A daily plan refreshes a stated amount and may not roll unused data forward. An unlimited plan can still have throttling or network-management notes. RoamSonar leaves per-GB blank for unlimited products rather than pretending there is a finite denominator.
Validity for a large itinerary
Count from the activation event specified by the provider, not automatically from landing. Some products start at installation; others at first connection. A 30-day plan can be good value for a two-week trip, while a 10-day plan is too short for a 12-day itinerary even if its purchase price is lower.
India’s distances make offline preparation worthwhile. Download map areas, hotel addresses, train or flight details and the provider’s support instructions before a long transfer. A temporary coverage gap should not block access to the information needed to continue the trip.
Configure dual SIM carefully
Keep the home SIM enabled for calls only if you understand its roaming charges. Turn off data roaming on the home line, choose the India eSIM for mobile data and disable automatic cellular-data switching. The travel eSIM may itself require roaming to connect through partner networks; apply settings per line rather than using one global assumption.
After arrival, enable the travel line, confirm it owns mobile data and wait for registration. Toggle airplane mode once if needed. If the provider supplied an APN, enter it exactly. Test with a small webpage before enabling photo backup or app updates.
Hotspot, calls and identity checks
Do not assume that every eSIM permits tethering. Use the hotspot filter when a laptop or travel companion depends on it; unknown policy is shown as a dash. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so keep messaging apps configured and confirm whether any product explicitly includes a phone number.
Identity requirements are plan-specific. RoamSonar badges eKYC when the catalog says it is required and shows Instant QR when the data supports immediate activation. Buy earlier when an identity step is disclosed. Never send passport images outside the provider’s official verification flow.
Compare local and regional products
An India-only plan is usually the cleanest comparison for a trip contained within India. An Asia regional plan can be useful if the itinerary continues to Singapore, Thailand or another covered destination, but check its exact country list. “Asia” is not a standardized coverage definition.
Compare the regional plan’s full price with the combined cost of destination plans. Also compare data structure, validity, hotspot, eKYC and top-up support. Convenience may justify a modest premium; an uncovered stop does not.
A sensible checkout routine
- Enter the real trip length and data need on the India page.
- Inspect the cheapest, fastest and recommended faces after applying any necessary filters.
- Confirm validity, activation policy and the exact India coverage list.
- Read throttle notes on unlimited products.
- Check hotspot and top-up if either matters.
- Follow the stored coupon instruction; some codes are automatic and others must be entered.
- Keep the receipt and support route offline.
The ranking formula is published on How we rank. It uses effective price after display-allowed coupons, data sufficiency, trip fit and disclosed friction. Providers cannot buy a better position.
Arrival-day fallback
Keep airport or hotel Wi-Fi as a recovery path. Do not delete a profile simply because it shows no service before reaching India. If it fails after arrival, confirm line selection, roaming on the travel line and the provider APN before reinstalling. Many QR codes are single-use.
The goal is not the largest number printed on a card. It is enough usable data, for every travel day, with settings and conditions you understand before the airport transfer begins.
